Date: 16 May 2008
Atlas Ward has recently been awarded the contract to build a new store for Swedish furniture giant IKEA, on behalf of the RG Group. The new store based in Ballymun, Co Dublin will be the first IKEA store in the Republic of Ireland.
The new store will have over 1,500 free car spaces and carry almost 10,000 products showcased in over 50 fully furnished room layouts. The store will also include a number of ancillary facilities for customers including a 500-seater restaurant, a bistro, a café and a Swedish Food Hall as well as a free crèche to cater for young children, while their parents are shopping. In addition, IKEA will invest €1.75 million into environmental processes at the store. This will ensure 44% of its total energy supply will be created by renewable sources.
The North Yorkshire-based steelwork contractor is responsible for the fabrication and erection of 2700 tonnes of structural steelwork for this project. The footprint for this building is 575,869 sq ft. The scope also includes the provision and installation of planks, staircases, pre-cast walls, floor decking and intumescent fire protection. The project comprises a car park at ground floor level with two floor levels above forming the main IKEA store.
This is the third IKEA store that Atlas Ward has been involved with; the first one was located in Ashton-under-Lyne, and was the 15th store in the UK. It consisted 2750 tonnes of structural steelwork and measured 450,000 sq ft.
