Premier Electrics - Retail Development - UK

Date: 23 Jul 2008

Leading Irish electrical contractor, Premier Electrics, has 'bagged' two major contracts for Debenhams.

One of the contracts involves the full design, supply and installation of lighting and Security and IT systems for the new store at the huge Westfield Shopping Centre at White City, London.

When complete, the £1.6bn centre will boast a retail floor area of 150,000 square metres, making it the largest shopping mall in Europe with over 300 stores and 50 restaurants.

Debenhams is one of the anchor tenants, with others including House of Fraser, M&S, Waitrose and Next. Alongside the myriad of shops, the centre will also feature a Cinema de Lux multiplex cinema.

There are currently 20 Premier Electric employees on what is believed to be part of the largest construction site currently in the UK - and the second largest in Europe site, working on all the vital electrical aspects of the new 110,000 square foot store which is expected to open in November this year.

Joe McCormack, senior contracts manager with Premier Electrics, said the White City contract represented yet another significant boost for the company and was further affirmation of the skill and commitment of the Premier workforce.

"We are delighted at the progress being made on the scheme so far," said Mr McCormack. "As always, we are committed to delivering high quality workmanship within the expected time frame. All the electrical work has to comply with the latest Debenhams' standard, current design standards, relevant British standards, building regulations and all DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) regulations."

The store will have four floors of trading sales and in addition to women's fashion, menswear, lingerie, cosmetics and homeware sections, there will also be a cafe, wedding gifts area, Virgin travel shop, Gold Card area, personal shopper service and nail bar.

The Northern Ireland company has also started electrical work at another new Debenhams store in Livingston, Scotland, involving the installation of some 1200 spotlights and background lights throughout the store.

The work here, which also includes the installation of an advanced aspiration fire alarm system - which can detect the faintest trace of smoke in the highest rafters of the building - is expected to continue until August.

These two contracts follow the completion of a major electrical scheme at a flagship Debenhams store in Liverpool which opened on May 29. Again, Premier Electrics was tasked with the complete electrical fit-out of the store, including the installation of glass lifts between the sales floors and 12 escalators.

Premier Electrics was established in 1993 and since then has built up a reputation for excellence in the industry thanks to lucrative and ongoing projects with key retailers such as M&S, Debenhams and Primark.

As part of a new marketing strategy, the company has retained a leading design consultancy and PR company and will shortly unveil a fresh new brand image to spearhead the company's continued penetration of the British and European markets.
