Date: 29 Jul 2008
According to recent research, the commercial property sector has been winding down its recruitment as the impact of the credit crunch starts to hit home. For an industry already affected by skills shortages and fast movement of staff, it is essential that businesses continue to invest in their people to ensure a high level of staff retention.
Accommodation services Management Ltd (ASM) has been committed to the professional development of its staff for a number of years. The Aberdeen-based company is celebrating after three of its employees became some of the first in Scotland to complete an SVQ Level 3 in Electrotechnical Services. The administration team has also been awarded vocational qualifications at various levels with the level 2 aimed at those starting their careers with the firm.
Frank Maughan, director of ASM, explains: "ConstructionSkills, the sector skills council for the construction industry, aims to have a 100% qualified workforce in all disciplines by 2010 - ASM continues to support this objective in our joinery, electrical and plumbing divisions.
"We were also delighted with the recent success of our administration team securing qualifications at various levels - the courses are a great way to build the confidence of young people who have joined the company straight from school as well as further development in the workplace.
"The qualifications that we offer our staff not only assist our growth but it also ensures our team are able to offer the highest level of service to our clients. Our clients include PSN, BP, NHS and Accenture and we know that when our teams enter their workplace, they will have both the practical training and theoretical knowledge to carry out their job."
Last year, ASM became the first company in the north-east to support their employees through an SQV Level 3 in the installation and inspection of data cabling systems. ASM also offers modern apprenticeships in joinery aimed at adults who are looking to further their careers in the commercial property sector.
Frank continued: "We are committed to developing our staff in new areas, supporting both their professional and personal development. We look across all areas of the business ensure every division of the company has access to training and development activities. By providing training opportunities for our workforce we are able to improve the levels of knowledge within our own company and the construction industry as a whole."
