Quest Property and Landmark Devlopments Projects - Mixed-Use Development - Gateway Plaza, Barnsley

Date: 15 Oct 2008

As rapid progress is made on site at Barnsley's groundbreaking Gateway Plaza scheme, developers Quest Property and Landmark Development Projects have unveiled the latest striking images of the £70M mixed use development.

The designs, produced by scheme architects Axis Architecture, showcase the high level of design for the development which is transforming the Barnsley skyline and attracting local and national occupiers.

The offices element, which comprises 96,000sq ft of Grade A office accommodation, has risen by a floor a month. Internal partitioning to the core areas is now complete and the glazing is underway, taking the offices close to the 'topping out' stage. The framework to the 188 apartment element is progressing well towards its February 2010 completion date and the link between the offices and the residential is now complete with insulation underway. The fit out of the 548 space car park continues and the team aim to begin the necessary highways work before the end of the year.

Director for Landmark Developments, Chris Gilman, says; "With so much visible progress being made daily on site, now is an opportune time for us to unveil how the finished product will look. Our initial designs were produced at an early stage in the project and since then have evolved alongside the development process. These latest images are representative of the high quality design and finish we have employed at Gateway Plaza. In today's challenging market, occupiers are increasingly seeking quality of product and value for money. We are confident that Gateway Plaza meets both these criteria, something already recognised by Whitbread and Berneslai Homes who we have secured as tenants."

Steve Burlaga, Director of Axis Architecture, discusses the design vision for the project; "With Gateway Plaza being a landmark scheme at such a prominent location in Barnsley, we have worked closely with the planners to select materials that will create a high quality, contemporary finish to stand the test of time. The curved façade facing the Lamproom Theatre will feature coloured glass and the Pinfold steps area will be upgraded with new lighting and a terrace area. The focal point of the scheme is the new 'public' square or plaza around which the hotel, offices, apartments and retail units are situated. This vibrant hub of the development will incorporate landscaped areas with tree planting, seating and natural stone paving and sets. The overall design aim was to create high quality, useable space with attention to design detail at every stage and we are very excited about seeing the finished product."

Upon its completion in 2009, Gateway Plaza will offer 96,000sq ft of open plan prime office accommodation in addition to 188 one, two and three bedroom apartments, the recently secured 110 bed Premier Inn and restaurant, 21,000sq ft of retail and leisure space and a 548 space car park all built around a large, modern central plaza.
