Retail: Greenwich, Cutty Sark Station

English Partnerships and Centros Miller's proposals for a mixed use development above the proposed Cutty Sark Station in Greenwich town centre have been granted outline planning permission by Greenwich Council.

The planned 0.56 hectare development comprises 8454 square metres of retail, restaurant and leisure space, including an 836 square metre restaurant with views over the Thames and Cutty Sark Gardens. An additional 5109.5 square metres of residential accommodation is also proposed on the western side of the site, being currently reserved as student digs for Greenwich University, who are taking over the former Royal Naval College for its main campus.

The joint venture partners have begun a marketing campaign to attract tenants for the development which is timed to open at the same time as the new station - part of the DLR extension - in December 1999.

English Partnerships is bearing up to £3.4 million towards land acquisition and will eventually own the entire site. The over station development is forecast to cost £15-£20 million.

Gareth Blacker, Senior Development Manager at English Partnerships. commented:

"We remain fully committed to working in partnership with Centros and their design team, the London Borough of Greenwich and the consortium - City Greenwich Lewisham Rail Link - to deliver a scheme that demonstrates a high quality of urban design, good environmental standards and appropriate land uses that will reflect the location of the site and its context within Greenwich close to the Cutty Sark".

"We are delighted with the outcome of our application which reaffirms our position as English Partnerships' preferred developer for this exciting project. We are currently on schedule with our programme and will be seeking to start on site in the summer of 1998", says John Wheeler, a director of Centros Miller.

Early forecasts are that the proposal could generate over 100 new jobs for the area.

Colin Buckle & Co are letting agents.
